Transportation in Kiev. Subway

August 20th, 2009

Kiev subway (Kyiv metro) consists from three lines – Red line (Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska line), Blue line (Kurenivsko-Chervnonarmiyska line) and Green line (Syretsko-Pecherska line). Underground is the fastest and the most comfortable transport in Kiev, because it takes only 20 minutes to reach centre from far suburbs and trip coasts only 1.70 hrivnas for all directions.

All three lines are connected in city centre – there are three junctions like Teatralna-Zoloti Vorota (Red–Green), Hreshchatyk-Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Red-Blue) and Pl.L.Tolstogo-Palats Sportu (Blue-Green). All of these junctions are located nearby, so why it is comfortable to interchange from line to line.

In subway, during rush-hours (7 am – 10 am and 5 pm – 8 pm), is full of passengers – each day, 1.9 millions are using this transport (for example, this number is bigger, then population of Kharkov, the second city in Ukraine by population). Each year, 664 millions of passenger’s uses underground. Because of this, metro can by full of people in rush hours, during this time it is very hard to use this transportation.

Like most of European subways, Kiev underground is interesting like architectural sight. Subway was opened 6 of November 1960, during Soviet era – first stations, that were opened for visitors were Vokzalna, Universitet, Hreshchatyk, Arsenalna and Dnipro (all of them on Red line). Like most of Soviet metro systems, Kiev subway stations were mostly underground and deep – today there are only few stations on the surface.

After opening, subway was extended on the Left bank. In 70-ies, metro is reaching Sviatoshyn and Nyvky suburbs, Blue line opens in 1976. In 80-ies, Blue line connects districts Podil, Obolon and Nova Zabudova with metro system. Then, in 1989, was opened for passengers Green line, that in 90-ies was extended to Lukianivka, Pechersk and Left bank suburbs – Osokorky, Poznyaky and Kharkivskyy massiv. In the new century, metro was extended to Syrets, Akademmistechko and Chervonyy Khutir. Today, authority has plans to extend metro to Holosiiv and Teremky (Blue line, late 2009-2011), Vynogradar and Nova Darnytsa (Green line, 2015-2020), open new line (Orange line, which will be reaching Voskresenka on Left bank and Solomianka on Right bank) which will have name Podilsko-Vygurivska and also a new line, which will located only on Left Bank (Cyan (Livoberezhna) line, this line will connect Troeshchyna, Voskresenka, Darnytsa, Berezhnyaky, Poznyaky and Osokorky).

Rolling stock in Kiev subway is mostly presented by five cars trains, that are working on Blue and Red line in 2-3 minutes interval (1 minute in rush hour) and in 5 minute interval on Green (2-3 in rush hour). In evening time, trains are stopping on stations each 8-10 minutes.

Red line, Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska line, is the oldest in metro system. Kiev administrative division: Holosiivskyy (Goloseevsky) municipality

June 1st, 2009

Administrative division of Kyiv: Kyiv consists of 10 administrative municipalities: 7 of them are located on the Right Bank (major part of the city), 3 of them – on the Left Bank. In 2001, these 10 municipalities were created on the basis of old districts. Districts on the Right Bank:Holosiivskyy (Goloseevsky) is the southernmost district of Kyiv on the Right Bank. Reaching downtown on the north, the district is mostly located on the territory of Holosiiv, Demiivka, Teremky & Kytaevo neighborhoods.

District comprises of these neighborhoods:  Nova Zabudova (centre), Demiivka, Bagrynova Gora, Holosiiv, Telichka, Dobra Put (5 miles from downtown), Konyk, Mysholovka, Kitaevo, Teremky I and Teremky II, Pyrogiv, Feofania, and Chapaevka (far suburbs). On the east side, it fasces the Dnipro River. Population of Goloseevsky rayon is 205 000. One of the greenest districts of Kyiv because of huge Holosiiv Park & Pyrogiv national park. Interesting places in this municipality are: Holosiiv Park, The Open Air Museum of National Architecture in Pyrogiv, Kitaevo Monastery, Lysa Gora Hill, National Exhibition Centre (located just in the forest), and Hippodrome. Also, the European highway E-95 (Odessa Highway) & National highway to Dnipropetrovs’k are passing through this district. There are big plants like Karl Marx Sweets Factory, TETS-5, etc. in this municipality. Here is located Central Bus Station on the Moscow Square, were buses are departing to the South direction (Odessa, Crimea, other Southern European destinations). District is served by four metro stations in the Northern part (South branch of the Blue line) and two railroad stations (Protasiv Yar & Kyiv-Moskovskyy) which are serving commuter trains from the East and South directions (Brovary, Boryspil, and Ukrainka).

The district suffers from the transportation problems – people from the South suburbs like Teremky & Holosiiv, who are working in centre, need to take subway, which is not built yet. Main Avenue of municipality – Holosiivskyy Avenue is always full of transport & Lybisdka metro station (Southern terminal of the Blue line) is full of people during the rush hours. Today, the city authorities are trying to solve the transportation  problem by building the Southern extension of the Blue line to the Teremky suburb. What is good is that it has a great lake in the forest, with paddle boats, cafes, ice-cream, and lot of fun!

Kiev tourist landmarks and museums - St. Cyril Church in Kyiv (Petrovka)

May 27th, 2009

St. Cyril Church in Kiev (Petrovka) is the only Eastern European orthodox temple with dual purpose: a prayer place and a fortress. It also served as a burial vault for the Olgovichi princely kin. It was built in the 12th century. It impresses visitors with its beauty and dignity. It is endangered now because of its base slump. A joint French, Polish and Bulgarian team of restorers is ready to help the church.
In the middle of the church, you can see murals of the saints and ancient warriors and on the right part of the wall – the painting of the angel folding the heaven. It is the only world fresco with such a topic. Besides, wall painting of XII century, you can find there icons and murals of the three epochs: Kievan Rus’, tempera portrait of the XVII century and the works of XIX century artists. Among them – the famous Michael Vrubel.
French businesses working in Ukraine provide significant help to the church. Among them a joint Ukrainian and French company that made a hydro isolation around the church. Another company from Germany also actively working in Kiev, has made drainage of the surround area. Not only Western European countries are interested in saving cultural ancestry of ancient Kiev. Specialists from such Eastern European countries as Bulgaria and Poland also contributed in the works to save the church.
This joint work of businessmen from France, Germany, Bulgaria, Poland and Ukraine is a good example of implementation of the idea of the Europe as our common home.
